MBTA Educational Foundation Scholarships

The Maine Better Transportation Association has a separate 501(c)3 charitable foundation — the MBTA Educational Foundation — that awards scholarships to Maine students in relevant transportation-related degree programs at community colleges and universities. Most of the money raised for the scholarships comes from the Foundation's annual Super Raffle. Preference may be given to students attending Maine universities or colleges, apart from the Millard Pray Scholarship which goes to students affiliated with CPM Constructors. Preference may also be given to students who have worked in the transportation or construction or engineering field, or who have shown other indications that construction or transportation is their career of choice. Applicants must have completed high school or the equivalent and be accepted or enrolled in a relevant program of study, including civil engineering, construction management, construction trades, marine, rail or aviation studies, heavy equipment operation, diesel mechanic, electrical, or similar majors. The deadline for applications is May 1, 2026, and awards will be sent to institutions for the account of the scholarship recipient in September. Students must complete an application and provide a resume, a copy of their current transcript (official or unofficial), and two written reference letters along with contact information for the references. The essays are an important part of the application: applicants must provide two essays (100-word minimum, 300-word maximum) answering "What draws you to the transportation field?" and "What are your aspirations after graduation?" Incomplete applications will not be considered. The Selection Committee scores applications on Academics, Work History, Written Essay, and References/Other. The Board of Directors selects recipients and also awards general scholarships for students in transportation fields; named awards include the Transportation Trailblazer Scholarship (up to four years; requires a 3.0 GPA, demonstrated leadership, and likelihood of remaining in Maine's transportation or construction industry), the Kenneth W. Burrill Scholarship, the Timothy M. Folster Scholarship (preference for civil or mechanical engineering students committed to seeking employment in Maine), the Frank A. Healy Scholarship, the Paul M. Koziell Scholarship, and the Millard W. Pray Scholarship (preference for students affiliated with CPM Constructors). The number of recipients will vary.
