The Grossmont Healthcare District is an active supporter of healthcare education and training for the benefit of future generations. Each year, a portion of the District’s grants and sponsorships overall budget is allocated to local college and high school students living or attending school within District boundaries through scholarships. Non-residents may also be granted scholarships as long as they have been working in the District for the last two years. Applicants must only apply to one program in a given year and can only be awarded once. The Grossmont Healthcare District offers the Richard Bea RN Memorial Nursing Scholarship. In order to apply, candidates must: be a current resident of the Grossmont Healthcare District for a minimum of one year (or a current employees for at least two years) or a graduate of a high school within the district; and have completed one successful year in a registered nursing program and demonstrate community volunteer work. The Richard J. Bea Community Service Scholarship awards TWO non-renewable scholarships to Registered Nursing (RN) candidates: $8,000 to the 1st place winner and $5,250 to the 2nd place winner. Applicants must submit a 500-word essay describing (a) how volunteering or other community service experience has influenced their nursing education, and (b) how they aspire to improve community health as a nurse. No AI-generated essays will be accepted. Applicants must also provide a current transcript showing one successful year in an accredited registered nursing program with evidence of current enrollment, evidence of past or present community volunteer work, and supporting documentation of an East County connection (residency, employment, or high school graduation). The award is not available to ADN to BSN, diploma to BSN/MSN/NP programs. Previous recipients are not eligible to reapply. Winners are selected at the Board of Directors meeting in late February or early March, with an awards ceremony held in May.
